Data protection & advertisements at GMX
The GMX online portal and homepage are all about you.
Advertisements you actually want to see? Yes, they do exist. But first, we have to know your preferences. Knowing more about you helps us to deliver the content you want to see, and nothing you don’t. All of your information is saved anonymously and confidentially on German servers, and you can control the use of your data for interest-based advertisements at any time, making sure your privacy is protected and you are in control of your experience.
What data do we process and why?
We use the information you provide while setting up your account, like your name and date of birth to customise your experience.
Through the direct control of relevant advertising, we show you content that corresponds to your preferences, adding value to your experience.
Revenue from the advertisements you see on the GMX online portal and home page allows us to offer you our free services.
To make sure you have the best user experience possible, we process visitor usage data and user group structure in accordance with current regulation. Our partners use user identification, for example, to show us that someone has already seen an advertisement multiple times, which allows us to switch it up, and show you something fresh.
Revoking consent to data processing
You can manage your preferences in My Account, or use the unsubscribe function for our partners’ cookies controls if you decide not to receive interest-based advertising. Please visit www.youronlinechoices.com to change your preferences.
Disabling interest-based advertisements and resetting advertisement IDs for Android devices
By default, the "Opt-out of interest-based ads” option is set to off on Android devices. If you want to turn this option on, open Google settings, tap “Ads” then click on “Opt-out of interest-based ads”.* This setting will prevent you from receiving interest-based advertisements across your device.
To reset your advertising ID, go to “Google Settings”, tap “Ads”, then click on “Reset advertising ID”. All previously collected information will be reset and the advertising ID on your device will be replaced by a randomly selected number.*
* Menu navigation may vary depending on your device and version.
Advertising IDs with applications (apps)
For the direct control of advertising content, we use Android Advertising IDs (AAID) with our Android applications and the Identifier for Advertising (IDFA) with our Apple applications. Both advertising IDs allow for device recognition without personal identification. If you download and use 1&1 Mail & Media GmbH apps, you automatically send us an ID number connected to your device (advertising ID).The advertising ID is linked only to your device, and is never used to identify you personally.
Saving personal data
Depending on the application reference, your anonymous usage data, related to advertising, will be saved by our online portal and that of our partners. Data will be saved for no longer than the maximum period defined by the law. Data is automatically deleted after that period.
If third-party systems are used to deliver advertising content, they are subject to the same data storage duration laws.
By using cookies from external providers, we are able to analyze user behavior on our website. Knowing how users interact with the various parts of our website, means we can continuously improve your user experience. Cookies only generate anonymous results and never identify your personal behavior. If you do not want cookies from our website to be saved by your browser, click on the following links to learn how to set your preferences.
Your data helps us improve user experience for our products, websites and applications. We use automatic standardised analysis procedures to help us improve. Information about revoking usage of your data for analysis purposes can be found here.
Cooperation with international companies
The protection of your data is our top priority even when it comes to advertising. We work with companies from around the world who want to advertise on our online portal. These companies also have international websites, meaning your anonymous usage data may be used outside of Germany.
The handling of personal data is regulated by the valid laws in each respective country. Within the EU, data is protected under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
