Terence Crawford urged to avoid Canelo Alvarez rematch by Roy Jones Jr.

Terence Crawford urged to avoid Canelo Alvarez rematch by Roy Jones Jr.

Roy Jones Jr. has urged Terence Crawford to avoid a rematch with Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.

Bud, 38, defeated Canelo, 30, last month to become the undisputed super middleweight champion, and Jones Jr. has said Crawford should turn his attention to the middleweight division now that he has beaten the Mexican boxer.

Speaking with The Ring, Captain Hook, 56, said: “I think he should go down and win a title at 160, and close it off – that's fire. [I’m] not really [interested in the rematch].”

As for Canelo, Jones Jr. said he could do “anything he wants to”, potentially even hang the mits up for good.

He said: “Canelo can do anything he wants to. Canelo can probably either take the rematch or close the door because Canelo has done way more than enough.”

Crawford had beaten Canelo by unanimous decision at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, making him one of the only boxers in the modern era to hold five belts across different divisions.

Reflecting on his win, he said: “It feels great. I'm just sitting back, enjoying my victory. It definitely was one of the greatest moments of my career.”

Crawford - who moved up two weight classes to face Canelo - added he may move down a weight class for his next fight.

He said: “I’m going to sit down with my team, and we are going to discuss what is next in the future for Terence Crawford. Who knows? I might go down to 160lbs.”

When asked whether this victory was the greatest moment of his career, Crawford said it was “tough” to say, as becoming the undisputed light welterweight champion in 2017 also holds special meaning to him.

He said: “This moment [beating Canelo] was huge, but something about that first one – this little poor kid from Omaha, Nebraska, set his sights out to be a world champion and had to travel all across the world to become world champion.

“And on one night, all of the dreams came true. Those two moments are definitely special.”
