There was speculation that Van Ginkel would return to PSV in the summer, despite Antonio Conte taking over as Chelsea manager.
However, any hope of a deal was scuppered when the £8million signing from Vitesse Arnhem in summer 2013 picked up a knee injury in pre-season which required surgery.
Van Ginkel finally started his return to action on Monday when he played an hour of Chelsea’s reserves 1-1 draw with Everton.
He will now be looking to get back to full fitness with no doubt one eye on forcing his way into Conte's plans at Stamford Bridge.
But PSV boss Phillip Cocu will be keeping an eye on Van Ginkel's situation with a view to taking him back to the Eredivisie in the New Year if he is struggling to feature for the Blues.
