The Japanese vehicle manufacturer have unveiled a new feature for the next generation Leaf electric vehicle, which helps drivers to accelerate, brake and steer.
In a post revealing the new technology, they wrote: "The widely anticipated new Nissan LEAF will feature state-of-the-art ProPILOT Assist technology, Nissan's driver-assistance technology that reduces the hassle of stop-and-go highway driving. ProPILOT Assist supports drivers by helping control acceleration, braking and steering during single-lane driving on the highway.
"In the coming years, Nissan's ProPILOT technology will offer increasing levels of autonomy, with the system eventually able to navigate city intersections. Set to help make driving more secure and more enjoyable, ProPILOT Assist is part of Nissan Intelligent Mobility, the company's blueprint for transforming how cars are driven, powered and integrated into society.
"By launching the LEAF, the world's first mass-market electric vehicle, Nissan established itself as a pioneer in the EV movement. Today the Nissan LEAF is the world's best-selling electric vehicle with more than 270,000 sold worldwide."
It is thought the new generation of the Leaf electric vehicle could be available as early as September, with shipping to customers starting by the end of 2018.
And it comes after it was announced in December last year that Nissan has been using self-driving cars to tow other vehicles around its Oppama production facility in Yokohama, near Tokyo, Japan.
They want it be able to use these cars all around the plant by 2019, with the hope they could get these cars to be used at plants across the world in the future.
Meanwhile, rivals Honda previously revealed they are planning to roll out autonomous cars by 2025.
Honda CEO Takahiro Hachigo said: "We're going to place utmost priority on electrification and advanced safety technologies going forward."
