A study by Bankrate.com has revealed that a significant amount of purchases for air travel and hotels are made on cards, at 85 per cent and 84 per cent respectively.
Bankrate.com analyst Ted Rossman said: "It's disappointing how many people are missing out on earning rewards for purchases they would have made anyway. As long as you're avoiding credit card debt and refraining from overspending, you should be using a rewards credit card for everything as it can make a big difference. Credit cards also offer better consumer and fraud protections than debit cards and cash."
However, this dramatically drops for purchases on grocery shopping and restaurants, with 44 per cent using a credit card for their supermarket purchases and for dining out, this figure sits at 43 per cent.
