Ivan Toney confident of spot in England's Euro 2024 squad

Ivan Toney thinks he has done enough to earn a place in England's Euro 2024 squad.

The striker converted a penalty in this week's 2-2 friendly draw with Belgium and hopes to have pipped Ollie Watkins for the right to be understudy to captain Harry Kane for Gareth Southgate's side.

Asked if his performance warranted a place at this summer's tournament, Toney said: "I hope I did. I’m always going to work hard. Ollie is my competition, but it’s friendly competition. I wish him all the best every time he goes on the pitch.

"But I felt like I did well. Hopefully, I gave myself a good chance of putting my name forward to be there for the Euros. It’s a joy to play with these players. I’m sure that, hopefully, I can play with them a lot more."

Toney's skill from the penalty spot could be important if England are involved in a shootout at the tournament and he says that "keeping calm" is the secret to his high success rate from 12 yards.

The Brentford star said: "I’ve always got to stay calm. At the penalty spot I always do that. I just stay calm, make the keeper wait for me and just slot it in the back of the net."

Toney had high praise for Manchester United's teenage ace Kobbie Mainoo after the midfielder impressed on his first England start.

He said: "At 18, I was probably playing on the Xbox and he is out there being a man and playing for England. He just glides with the ball and I’m sure there’s more to come from him and he will go right to the top."
