One unique password per online service

The key for a safe account

Using the very same password for different online accounts, such as online shops or email accounts, is a common mistake many of us make. It puts all accounts at risk if this one password gets cracked. In particular, your email password needs to be extra secure, as we use our email account for resetting and changing passwords of other accounts. Once the email password is hacked, the login credentials of your other online service accounts could become subject to unauthorised changes as well. With our GMX password safety tips, you can keep this from happening. Find out more below.

Creating and changing your password

Choose a secure password

Create a secure password

To create a password we require the following:
  • That it is at least 8 characters long
  • That it contains both uppercase and lowercase letters
  • That it contains numbers
  • That it contains special characters, e.g. ‘!‘, ‘%‘, ‘-‘

It is important to have strong passwords not only at GMX, but also on any other sites you need to log in to, e.g. banks or online shops. They help protect your accounts from fraudulent activities and other unwanted situations as they are hard to crack and unknown to anyone except you.

Make sure you never choose a password that contains personal data such as your date of birth, or the name of a family member or pet. They can be easily guessed and make it easy for someone to access your private account without your permission.

Change password

Change your password

In order to change your password, you need to follow the steps below:
  • Log in to your GMX email account
  • Select the ‘Home‘ tab at the top of the email client
  • Click ‘My Account‘ under ‘Personalization‘ on the left side
  • Click ‘Security Options‘
  • Under ‘Password‘, click ‘Change password‘
  • Enter your current password, then enter your new, strong password twice
  • By clicking ‘Save changes‘, you confirm the change of your password

From now on, you have to use the new password to access your GMX email account. Please make sure to also apply these changes to the GMX Mail app or any other mail programs you use.
