Xabi Alonso: Bayer Leverkusen are fully motivated for West Ham tie

Xabi Alonso does not expect Bayer Leverkusen to suffer any lingering effects from their title celebrations in their Europa League with West Ham.

The German side secured the first league title in their history last weekend and the coach does not expect his side to take their eye off the ball as they defend a 2-0 lead in Thursday's (18.04.24) quarter-final second leg.

Alonso said: "The team and players have given me no reasons to doubt them.

"Because of the commitment, the concentration and mentality that they have had. Even after a big success, I feel the hunger and desire of these players and this team not to stop.

"We are pushing for that. We have a big chance tomorrow. If we don’t go through, it is not going to be because of the mentality. I have all the confidence. We come in a humble way but in a confident way. We have the experience last year of going to the semi-final and now we want to go even further."

Leverkusen midfielder Granit Xhaka reiterated Alonso's message as the team looks to preserve their unbeaten record in all competitions this season.

He said: "When you are in the quarter-finals, the hunger to win is always there. We have talked enough about Sunday, we became champions, but we know that tomorrow is an important game and so are the rest of our league games. Everyone is fit and hopefully we will have a great game."
