Bastian Schweinsteiger didn't want to coach

Bastian Schweinsteiger was never temped to move into coaching.

The 39-year-old former footballer now works as a pundit in his native Germany and he enjoys still being close to the game while having plenty of time to be with his family.

Asked if he had thought about coaching after he retired from playing, he told FourFourTwo magazine: “Not really – I don’t currently picture myself working on the side of the pitch 365 days a year.

“I have a few partners I’m working with so my schedule is kind of full, but I can still enjoy spending time with my family and the kids, which is very important for me.

“You never know, but I work for a German television channel as an expert so I’m close to the game, which is also important for me.”

The ex-Bayern Munich midfielder believes the German national team need to find the right balance between “offensive and defensive” football in order to get back to their best.

Asked what the side needs, he said: “A better balance between offensive football and defensive football.

“We have unbelievable offensive players – Jamal Musiala is a gift… from England!

“We just need to strengthen our defensive work a bit and then I think we can be there for the Euros.

“For me, if we make the quarter finals then that would already be something good, but even more important is that people can identify with the team. That’s the most important thing of all.”
