Marco Rossi calls for Hungarian coaches to play more young players

Marco Rossi wants Hungary’s domestic teams to field more young players.

The national coach knows the standard of football is some way behind other leagues in Europe and he thinks one way the gap could be reduced is by investing in new talent.

HHe told World Soccer magazine: “We talk about this a lot. It’s difficult to do this because when you have to compete with leagues that have much more money and can invite and sign players of a different level, this gap can never be closed.

“The strategy could be to work more on the youth academies, to grow talents that could play at a young age in our league and afterwards be sold abroad.

“In Hungary, too few coaches are fielding youngsters.”

Hungary’s Euro 2020 squad featured 12 home-based players but they are slowly adding more who are playing in other countries, with just four domestic stars in their last games, and Marco hopes that figure continues to decrease.

He said: “In the last call-up we had only four home-based players.

“The Hungarian championship is ranked [23rd in the UEFA coefficients[, so it is a good thing to have players abroad.

“Without injuries, we have eight players from the top leagues.

“My wish is that every year we could add some more players to the top leagues because of the technical aspect, the intensity, the tactical preparations of the coaches and other aspects.”
