Canelo Alvarez will support son's boxing ambitions

Canelo Alvarez wishes his five-year-old son didn’t want to be a boxer too.

The 33-year-old super middleweight’s son, Saul Jr., “understands” all the effort his dad has put into the sport and though the Mexican wishes the youngster had his ambitions focused elsewhere, he accepts that he wants to follow in his footsteps.

He told Boxing News magazine: “He understands it very well. He wants to be a fighter too.

“I ask him if he’d like to do something else, another sport, but he says he wants to be a fighter.

“At the end of the day, it’s what he wants, not me, so he understands it perfectly, he knows what a fighter is, because he sees me training, sees my discipline, what I do, and he understands it perfectly well.

“It’s not what I’d like. It’s what he wants in the end.

“I would love to see him to whatever, as long as he loves it, really enjoys it, puts in maximum effort and, whatever he does, I’ll support him.”

Canelo admitted his young son already loves to train with him.

He said: “Yes he trains. He was here all last week, training.

“They were on holiday and he trained the whole week with me and he likes it a lot.”
