Leah Williamson left in 'disbelief' as England defend Euros crown

Leah Williamson has been left in "total disbelief" after England successfully defended their European crown.

The Lionesses beat Spain on penalties to win Euro 2025 on Sunday (27.07.25) and the captain is stunned after becoming the first England skipper to lift two major trophies.

Williamson said: "[I'm in] total disbelief, but at the same time, I knew it was going to happen.

"It's just unbelievable to do it again. And after that first game, no one thought we would - and fair enough! But nothing has changed."

Williamson is now a European champion at both club and international level after winning the Champions League with Arsenal earlier this year and she says the accomplishments are yet to truly sink in.

She said: "I'll reflect on the last couple of years since that last win, I'm proud."

Williamson conceded that the Lionesses did not play at their best throughout the tournament but praised the team for bouncing back after losing their opening match to France.

The defender said: "The stakes, everything was higher. We have ridden our luck, but I don't think we were lucky."

England's triumph at Euro 2022 had a huge impact on the women's game in the country and Williamson is "looking forward" to see how their latest victory changes things.

She said: "My cousin texted me before the game today and she said how lucky that these finals sort of become the norm, in terms of how it feels and how lucky we are to be a part of something like that and I share that sentiment.

"It's so hard to get to a final and the success of the pitch is normally already done, but to then win, you just take it to another level. I don't know what the effect will be, but looking forward to seeing it."
