Luke Donald: Ryder Cup can 'inspire generations'

Luke Donald believes Ryder Cup players can “inspire generations”.

The 47-year-old Europe captain insisted rookies deserve their places in the tournament and should appreciate that they have the opportunity to establish their own “legacy”.

Asked what rookies bring to a Ryder Cup team, he told Golf Monthly magazine: “Well, they’re there for a reason – it’s because they’re damn good players and they’re the next generation.

“If you create the right messaging for them, they get pretty inspired about what the Ryder Cup represents.

“That was my goal for people like Ludvig and Bob.

“This isn’t just a tournament, this is something special.

“You can create your own legacy by playing well. You can inspire generations.”

When it comes to the four-ball and foursome pairings, Luke explained personality can be just as important a factor as playing style and statistics.

He said: “We look at personality match-ups but also statistics – whether you’re a foursome or four-ball player.

“How many birdies do you make? There’s a bit more to it than that, but we start with personality match-ups because you want to be comfortable with who you’re playing with.”
