The Liverpool winger’s long-term future at Anfield is seemingly uncertain following public frustration over his contract situation, while Ronaldo is said to be increasingly unsettled at Al Nassr amid a dispute over the club’s transfer backing, creating a potential opening for a major reshuffle at the top of the Saudi Pro League.
According to the Daily Express, Al Nassr are exploring contingency plans should Ronaldo depart, with Salah viewed as a marketable global superstar capable of becoming the league’s next flagship name.
The Egypt international is understood to have attracted interest from Saudi Arabia for several seasons and could be offered a deal that would significantly exceed his current Liverpool salary, should he decide to end his nine-year spell on Merseyside.
Ronaldo’s position has come under scrutiny after he was left out of recent matches and returned to training amid claims of a breakdown in relations with club decision-makers.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner is said to be frustrated by perceived inconsistencies in spending across the Public Investment Fund-backed clubs, particularly following Karim Benzema’s move from Al Ittihad to rivals Al Hilal.
Saudi Pro League officials have insisted that recruitment decisions are made independently by each club within a financial framework designed to ensure sustainability.
A league spokesperson said in a statement: “Every club operates independently under the same rules. Decisions on recruitment, spending and strategy sit with those clubs, within a financial framework designed to ensure sustainability and competitive balance.”
Despite that stance, Ronaldo is believed to be considering his options, with a return to Europe not ruled out.
In a report from The Sun, Sporting CP - where the Portugal captain began his professional career - have been linked with Ronaldo if they can meet a reported £43 million release clause expected to become active at the end of the season.
Al Nassr are understood to be preparing for multiple scenarios, but any pursuit of Salah is likely to depend on Ronaldo’s next move.
This comes just weeks after it was reported Salah was one of 50 Premier League stars being eyed by Saudi Pro League bosses, with the hopes they would arrive in the Middle East following the 2026 World Cup.
