The England manager watched the Red Devils’ recent draw at West Ham and suggested the pair – along with Luke Shaw – have played their way back into serious consideration for the Three Lions ahead of this summer’s tournament in North America.
Speaking with talkSPORT, the England manager: “They were always in the picture, but they are more so now in the picture.
“I guessed that they were in the starting line-up and I guessed right. That’s why I wanted to see them. I wanted to see them live.
“I’m very happy that they are in good form and in good shape because they are back in the picture.”
Under caretaker boss Michael Carrick, Mainoo has re-established himself as a key figure in midfield, while Maguire has impressed at centre-back during United’s recent upturn in results.
Shaw - who has struggled with injury in recent seasons - has also featured prominently since Carrick’s arrival.
None of the three have featured for England during Tuchel’s tenure so far.
Shaw has not added to his 34 caps since the Euro 2024 final, which was Gareth Southgate’s last game in charge.
Mainoo and Maguire were last involved in September 2024 during the Nations League under Lee Carsley.
Tuchel will name his next squad in March for friendlies against Uruguay and Japan in what will be the final opportunity for players to stake their claim before he selects his travelling party for the U.S.
Tuchel said: “March gives us the chance to have a last look at players before we need to nominate for our trip to the U.S. So, yes, they’re in the picture and I’m happy because competition is on.”
England have also confirmed pre-tournament friendlies against New Zealand and Costa Rica in Florida before opening their World Cup campaign against Croatia on June 17, 2026.
Tuchel was speaking after England’s Nations League draw, which paired them with Spain, Croatia and Czechia between September and November.
The German - who had originally been set to leave after the World Cup - has since extended his contract with the Football Association until the end of Euro 2028.
