The 33-year-old sportsman recently joined the tour and while he is upset not to get the chance to defend his VM Phoenix Open crown, he believes there are a lot of benefits to the change.
He told Today’s Golfer magazine: “It was one of the toughest decisions I ever had to make.
“The idea of not defending Phoenix was really sad for me, because it was obviously my biggest win, and I think it’s potentially one of the coolest tournaments on the PGA tour.
“But then again, there are plenty of other positives, like the team event, and being able to be at home more.”
The decision was largely driven by Thomas’ personal life.
He said: “I have a wife and two small children and we’ve been pretty much living like [nomads] all around the US, going from tournament to tournament.
“We then slowly came around to the idea that it could fit our lives much better…
“The PGA tour mainly play in America, whereas it looks like the DP and LIV are becoming more of a global tour.
And being based in Dubai and in London, a more global tour does fit our lives a bit better.
“I’m Belgian, my wife is British, and we love spending time in England in the summer.
“And in a way, Dubai has a very big expat community, so we do feel a little sense of Europe out there as well.
“We like the idea of spending more time in London or Dubai, rather than spending six months on the road, living out of a suitcase with two children.”
