The 23-year-old sportsman found the back of the net for Spain in the second half against England and he’ll never forget playing such a key role in their 2-1 victory in the final game of the tournament.

He told FourFourTwo magazine: “That goal against England was incredible.

“It was a very quick play – I knew Lamine (Yamal) and he knew perfectly well he was going to put the ball there for me.

“To score a goal in a Euros final was unbelievable.”

Despite his pride in the final, Nico wasn’t happy with his own performance in Spain’s first game, a 3-0 victory over Croatia.

He said: “I remember the first game against Croatia – I didn’t play very well.

“The game was a bit bad for me, but the team managed to win.

“But for me, I have that European Championship in my heart.

“It filled me with courage.

“Playing with teammates like the ones I have in the national team and the story with them is incredible.

“I’ve been able to learn a lot from players like Alvara Morata and Dani Carvajal, who are legends of the national team.”
