Thomas Tuchel: Phil Foden isn't guaranteed a World Cup place

Thomas Tuchel has stated that Phil Foden is not guaranteed a place in England's World Cup squad.

The Manchester City star failed to make an impression in the Three Lions' friendly games against both Uruguay and Japan and the coach admits that he was disappointed with the forward's lack of impact.

Asked if Foden had taken his chance, Tuchel told reporters: "He tried everything. I would say he was excellent in camp but, yeah, he struggles to show it on the pitch.

"Obviously he didn't have a lot of minutes for City recently, then he came to camp with the brightest smile and was so good in training.

"And I thought he will just surprise us and will play with the same verve and excitement but, yeah, he struggles to have the full impact."

Foden has struggled to produce his best form during his 49-cap international career and the England boss indicated that he is not certain of a place in the 26-man travelling party to North America this summer.

Asked if the player's lack of matches with City places doubt against him, Tuchel replied: "Well, it's not a guarantee that he will come."

Tuchel now has eight weeks before selecting his World Cup squad at the end of May and says that the latest international break has given him "more clarity" about who will be on the plane.

He said: "I learn all the time. I learn from every training session, and I learn from how the squad is together and I learn from how the players react to the gameplan and how they adapt.

"How quick they can learn and how quick they can adapt and how they can put it on the pitch. Everything is a learning."
