Jamie Carragher praises Thomas Tuchel for tough decision making

Jamie Carragher wishes he had played for England under Thomas Tuchel.

The former Liverpool player praised the manager for taking tough decisions with his 26-man World Cup squad and prioritising "energy and harmony over talent".

He wrote in his column for the Daily Telegraph: "My immediate reaction upon seeing the direction taken by Tuchel is that I wish he was my England coach 20 years ago.

£In my lifetime, England squads have generally been constructed by choosing as many of the perceived ‘best’ players in the country first and then worrying about how to fit them all into the starting XI later. We can cite countless examples of square pegs in round holes, most notably during the ‘golden generation’ era in the early 2000s, and certainly at the World Cups I played in 2006 and 2010.

"There is no point making the same mistakes since 1966 and expecting a different outcome.

"The logic behind the 26-names confirmed on Friday morning can be summarised as this: energy and harmony over talent. Tuchel has picked those who he believes are good characters as well as good footballers.

"No-one will convince me Tuchel has gone with the most talented 26 players in England. If he did, Phil Foden and Cole Palmer would be on the plane."

Jamie admitted he doesn't think any possible England squad could convince them they will win the tournament right now.

He wrote: "Ultimately, success or failure will be determined by what happens on the pitch – where it always matters most.

"Tuchel made his choices based on a vision for the team he has been fine tuning over the past two years. Is it a squad that would make me tip England to win the World Cup? No, but no current England line-up would persuade me of that.

"Only a series of high-class performances will swell belief that the wait to be world champions will soon be over.

"Tuchel is wise enough to know that the most valid judgements on whether his squad enhanced or decreased the chances of reaching the later stages will be made after the tournament."
