BBC’s ‘Stay Up or Catch Up’ plan gives England fans World Cup choice

BBC’s ‘Stay Up or Catch Up’ plan gives England fans World Cup choice

The BBC is offering England fans a choice between staying awake through the early hours or watching the match spoiler-free after confirming a special “Stay Up or Catch Up” schedule for the Three Lions’ World Cup last-16 tie against Mexico. The move comes as excitement continues to build around Thomas Tuchel’s England side following their dramatic progress to the knockout stages, with the BBC unveiling an expanded range of viewing options for supporters facing a 1am BST kick-off.

England will face Mexico in the last 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Monday (04.07.26), with the match kicking off at 01:00 BST and broadcast live exclusively on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

Presenter Kelly Cates will front the coverage alongside former England captain Wayne Rooney, ex-goalkeeper Joe Hart and former Manchester City and England defender Micah Richards.

Recognising many supporters will be unable to watch live overnight, the broadcaster has also announced a full no-spoiler replay on BBC Two at 07:10 BST, while the complete match will be available on demand from 06:00 BST via BBC iPlayer. The BBC’s coverage will also include live commentary on BBC Radio 5 Live and BBC Sounds, live text updates and in-match clips across the BBC Sport website and app, an extended 15-minute highlights programme on BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport Football YouTube channel, plus its interactive World Cup 3D viewing experience.

The announcement follows strong viewing figures throughout the tournament, with England’s dramatic victory over DR Congo attracting a peak television audience of 16.3 million viewers.

Tuchel, who succeeded Gareth Southgate after England reached the Euro 2024 final, has guided the national team into the knockout stages of his first major tournament in charge.

BBC director of sport Alex Kay-Jelski said: “World Cup knockout football is absolutely unmissable, but a 1:00am kick-off isn't realistic for everyone.

“We wanted to make sure there was an option for those fans who just can’t stay up to experience one of England's biggest matches live.

“So, whether you're staying up to watch every minute live or waking up to catch every moment spoiler-free, BBC Sport has you covered this Monday.

“From our exclusive live broadcast to our dedicated catch-up experience, we're making it easier than ever for audiences to enjoy the World Cup on their terms.”

The BBC said the match replay would be shown without spoilers to allow viewers waking up on Monday morning to experience the knockout tie as though it were live.

Supporters will also be able to follow the game through BBC Radio 5 Live, BBC Sounds, the BBC Sport website and app, while the broadcaster’s World Cup 3D feature will again provide an alternative way of following every moment.

England’s progress has generated significant audiences throughout the tournament.

A peak audience of 16.3 million watched the 2-1 victory over DR Congo in the previous round, while England’s group-stage matches against Croatia, Ghana and Panama also attracted audiences of more than 13 million across the BBC and ITV.

Tuchel has urged parents to allow children to stay up for the overnight fixture.

He said: “There’s so much school to go to, but the World Cup is every four years. Let them watch.

“There will be a big match in four days, and we need the support of everyone, especially the children.”

The Football Association has also benefited from renewed optimism around the national team after England reached consecutive European Championship finals under Gareth Southgate before Tuchel took charge.

Supporters will now hope the former Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich manager can guide England to their first World Cup triumph since 1966 as preparations continue for the meeting with Mexico.
