Alan Smith has England career regrets

Alan Smith regrets not performing better for England.

The former Arsenal striker earned 13 caps for the Three Lions - scoring two goals - but feels a sense of frustration that he was never able to transfer his club form to the international stage.

Speaking to FourFourTwo magazine, Smith said: "Well, I did get opportunities with Bobby Robson and Graham Taylor, but I could never really grasp them.

"I found it hard to produce my club form. I needed to get a few goals to feel part of it, but always felt I was on trial. You really have to hit the ground running for England."

He continued: "I was gutted I didn't go to the World Cup in 1990, though. Bobby said he picked Steve Bull's goals ahead of my lack of them that year. Bully was in the division below, and I'd won the Golden Boot the year before.

"At one stage, Bobby wanted to see if he could reunite with me Gary (Lineker), but it didn't quite happen. I don't feel I didn't get my proper shout, though."

Since retiring from the game, Smith has moved into commentary for Sky Sports and is amazed at the amount of recognition he gets for his work on the FIFA video game franchise alongside Martin Tyler from 2011 to 2019.

He said: "I still get people talking to me about FIFA, saying, 'You were the voice of my childhood.'

"I did a podcast with Joleon Lescott recently and he said the same thing. You don't realise at the time how many people it influences.

"I remember visiting my daughter at university – it was summer, everyone had the windows open, and all I could hear was my voice booming out of the rooms."
