City could be in the hunt for a new central defender to replace Vincent Kompany, and there are none better than De Ligt, who is in hot demand this summer.
Barcelona are hot favourites to do a deal, while United are also on his trail, but Dutch legend Louis van Gaal believes his fellow countryman should snub them both and sign for City if he gets the chance.
The former United boss says the chance to work with City manager Pep Guardiola would be too good an opportunity to turn down and one that should be taken.
"I think exactly the same. Although De Ligt can go to Barcelona too, because I don't like their central defenders either," Van Gaal told Fox Sports.
"He could play at Barcelona, but he could play for Manchester City also. And in that case I would choose Pep Guardiola over Lionel Messi."
De Ligt will not come cheap, and with Guardiola targeting other areas of his squad also, it remains to be seen whether he would push ahead with a deal for the defender.
