Greenpeace UK blast 'absolute scandal' after 6 in 10 new UK homes built without solar panels

Planet protectors Greenpeace UK have branded it an "absolute scandal" that new homes are being built in the UK "without rooftop solar panels".

The charity, which is dedicated to protecting the natural world, has called on the UK government to make solar panels on new builds "mandatory", especially in "this day and age".

Greenpeace UK campaigner Lily Rose Ellis said: "Given the soaring cost of electricity, our desperate need to cut planet-heating emissions, and the relatively low cost of installation to housebuilders, solar panels on all new builds should be mandatory."

According to findings from industry body Solar Energy UK, only 40 per cent of new homes have solar power.

The Local Government Association (LGA) has also written a new report calling for mandatory solar panels in new-build homes, insisting it could save those homeowners around £440 a year on bills.

Cllr Adam Hug, environment spokesperson for the LGA, said: "This report sets out what councils can achieve and how to do it, if the Government is able to back them with the powers and funding to turn this into a reality.

"Councils are ready to go further and faster on climate action - but we need a plan that works in partnership with local government. However, the funding or policies needed to empower them to help fully realise this ambition are not yet in place.

"The Government should use the Spending Review to ensure that councils are sufficiently funded, and take on the policy recommendations that will help local government fulfil its role in tackling climate change."

But the Home Builders Federation explained: "Moving forward, to meet the ever more challenging carbon reductions set by government, we will see solar on the overwhelming majority of new homes, albeit it is not appropriate in every situation."
