Apple ‘considering powering Siri with ChatGPT or Claude amid Apple Intelligence woes’

Apple is reportedly exploring using OpenAI and Anthropic’s models to power Siri, as its in‑house AI efforts struggle with persistent delays.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is considering integrating third‑party large language models (LLMs) like OpenAI’s ChatGPT or Anthropic’s Claude to reboot Siri.

The company allegedly asked both firms to train custom versions that can run on Apple’s own private cloud, with testing beginning in mid-2025.

Gurman claims: “Apple is weighing using Anthropic or OpenAI to power a new version of Siri, instead of its own in‑house models.

“Discussions with the two companies have involved the possibility of training large language models that could be tested using Apple’s cloud infrastructure.”

The supposed move follows persistent delays to Apple’s Siri refresh - initially slated for 2025, though pushed back to 2026 - after Siri chief John Giannandrea was replaced by Mike Rockwell earlier this year.

At this year’s WWDC, Apple deferred broader AI plans, instead focusing on practical upgrades like live translation for phone calls.

These talks come as Apple aims to close the gap between Siri and rivals like Google’s Gemini or ChatGPT-powered services.

Industry reports note that internal tests show Anthropic’s Claude currently outperforms Apple’s own models.

Apple has reportedly conducted early-stage testing for integrating other AI models into Siri, but no decision has been made yet.

The Siri integration could supposedly begin in late 2026 if a partnership is confirmed, though Apple is also said to be continuing development on its in‑house foundation models for Siri.

Apple currently allows ChatPGT to be used within Siri’s Writing Tools in iOS 18 for Apple Intelligence devices.
