OpenAI unveils new ChatGPT ‘study mode’ for students

OpenAI has launched a new ‘study mode’ for ChatGPT, aimed at helping students with learning and academic tasks.

Announced on Tuesday (29.07.25), the feature transforms ChatGPT into a virtual study companion that can generate flashcards, quizzes, and personalised explanations for a wide range of subjects.

According to OpenAI, study mode allows students to quickly convert their notes, textbooks, and uploaded documents into tailored revision materials.

The AI can also break down complex topics into digestible sections, making it easier for users to prepare for exams or understand challenging concepts.

In a statement, OpenAI said: “Study mode gives students more control over how they learn.

“By generating flashcards, creating quizzes, and explaining concepts in ways that suit their style, ChatGPT helps students prepare smarter and faster.”

The new tool is powered by OpenAI’s latest models and leverages its advanced reasoning capabilities.

It also includes interactive options that encourage active learning rather than simple answer retrieval, a feature developed in response to educator feedback.

OpenAI emphasised that the feature is intended to complement traditional learning methods.

The company said: “We’ve built study mode to encourage critical thinking and comprehension, not just quick answers.”

Study mode is available starting today (30.07.25) for ChatGPT Plus and Pro users in the U.S., with a global rollout expected later this year.

Students using the free tier will also get limited access to the feature in the coming weeks.

OpenAI has hinted at future updates, including the ability to integrate study mode with popular e-learning platforms and tools for collaborative learning sessions, further expanding its utility for both students and educators.
