Sadiq Khan invites Anthropic to expand in London

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has invited the AI developer Anthropic to expand in the city.

The company has been involved in a dispute with US President Donald Trump's administration after boss Dario Amodei refused to give America's defence agencies unrestricted access to its tech tools.

Khan has penned a letter to Amodei that could position London as an alternative platform for Anthropic if its tense relationship with the US government continues.

The London Mayor wrote: "It is extremely concerning to see this kind of behaviour, which is a clear attempt to intimidate and punish Anthropic for refusing to remove ethical safeguards.

"I applaud your steadfastness in the face of such pressure. It would be good to discuss how we could support you to expand operations further."

Asked about Khan's letter and offer, a White House spokesperson told the BBC: "As President Trump said, we will never allow a radical left, woke company to dictate how our United States Military fights wars."

During talks with US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, Amodei took exception to the possibility of Anthropic's Claude model being used to conduct mass domestic surveillance or autonomous military targeting.

The Pentagon has stressed that the military must be able to use technology "for all lawful purposes".

Trump declared last week that he would direct every federal agency to stop using tech from Anthropic immediately.

He wrote on Truth Social: "We don't need it, we don't want it, and will not do business with them again!"

Anthropic stated in response: "No amount of intimidation or punishment from the Department of War will change our position on mass domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weapons."
