OpenAI shutters Sora App after less than 18 months

OpenAI has suddenly shuttered its Sora App after less than 18 months.

The company launched Sora less than 18 months ago followed by the Sora App in 2025, but now the team has confirmed the "disappointing" update on the future of the generative AI video platform.

They wrote on X: "We’re saying goodbye to the Sora app.

"To everyone who created with Sora, shared it, and built community around it: thank you. What you made with Sora mattered, and we know this news is disappointing.

"We’ll share more soon, including timelines for the app and API and details on preserving your work."

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is yet to expand on the unexpected decision, but the company has offered a little more context around the decision.

The company told the BBC that Sora is being scrapped to allow them to focus on other projects like robotics which "will help people solve real-world, physical tasks".

Elsewhere, it's been reported that Disney has pulled out of a $1 billion investment deal, which would have seen its iconic characters arrive on Sora.

OpenAI has confirmed its content partnership with Disney will wind down.

A spokesperson for the Walt Disney Company said: "We respect OpenAI's decision to exit the video generation business and to shift its priorities elsewhere."

Disney will look to other AI platforms in a bid to find ways to responsibility use technology without going against IP rights.

One of the platform's main features was having permission to create AI characters based on real Sora users.
