The tech giant has reduced its total company headcount by around 10 percent of its 78,000 workforce, with approximately 8,000 people losing their jobs, while more than 7,000 others will be moved within Meta to work on new AI initiatives.
As reported by Business Insider, an email from Meta management read: "As previously shared, we have decided to reduce headcount as part of our continued effort to run the company more efficiently and to allow us to offset the other investments we're making.
"Unfortunately, your role has been eliminated as part of today's reorganization.
"Before sharing additional details, we want to thank you for all you've contributed to Meta.
"We appreciate the important role you've played in the company's journey."
The email has directed employees affected by the job losses to their Alumni Portal with information and resources, as well as guidance on visas, severance and more.
The email signed off by Meta Leadership concludes: "Finally, we want to say again that we're grateful for your contributions.
"Your impact at Meta has been an important part of our story."
Meta are yet to officially confirm how many staff have been impacted by the cuts, but some employees have posted on LinkedIn about the cuts.
One person wrote: "My time to die. Today, after nearly 7 years, I got laid off from Meta.
"It was a hell of a run, honestly the best job I ever had. The work was great—challenging, interesting, varied—but the best part was the people.
"I used to say that you were doing well if you liked 80 [percent] of your coworkers, but at Meta it was more like 98 [percent] (whether or not I was part of the 2 [percent] I will leave up to you, Dear Reader).
"Everybody was — and is — simultaneously so gung-ho but also caring, kind, helpful, and scary smart. This morning it's a bummer with how it shook out but I can't complain.
"This job brought me to Seattle, expanded my skills and network in ways I never thought were possible — but mostly it was just a lot of fun. I hope I can find something new that's just as fun and challenging."
In another lengthy post, a separate staff member said: "After 6 incredible years at Meta, I was impacted by the recent layoffs (as part of the 8,000 metamates).
"While this isn’t the ending I expected, I’m deeply proud of the journey and the work we built together."
