The tech giant is rolling out a decluttered Search Box to Windows Insiders in its Experimental channel in a move that rids the box of ads and recommended content.
In a blog post, Windows' Jeff Petty and Bing Search's Anderson Aiziro wrote: "You’ve been asking for search that is faster, more relevant, and easier to use — whether you’re opening an app, finding a file, or changing a setting.
"Because the Windows Search Box is where many people start, we focused first on making results more dependable, easier to scan, and clearer before you click."
Microsoft has promised "several improvements", starting with a "calmer home screen", which has been "simplified to reduce visual clutter and make it easier to get back to recent searches quickly".
The changes also bring "clearer results", while improving how search shows "where a result came from", where that's an app, settings, web result, file, or Store suggestion.
They have removed "promotional content" from web results, which now focus on "the relevant answer" rather than "related products and promotions".
Meanwhile, users will be able to go into settings and determined whether web and Store suggestions can appear with local results, and the latter will be "prioritised when they're the better match".
Microsoft also noted improvements to finding files, reliability, settings result and finding apps.
