The latest hybrid version of the Sonata comes with a silicone lining in the roof and can charge anywhere between 30 per cent and 60 per cent of the battery.
The South Korean automobile makers have claimed that if it was left in sun for six hours every day,
the vehicle could travel 800 miles a year.
Heui Won Yang, senior vice president of the firm, said: "Solar roof technology is a good example of how Hyundai is moving towards becoming a clean mobility provider.
"The technology allows our customers to actively tackle the emissions issue."
