Ibiza places limit on tourist car numbers to fight overtourism

Ibiza has placed a cap on the number of tourist cars that can visit the island.

The Balearic Island will only allow 20,168 vehicles used by non-residents during the peak summer season between June 1 and September 30 in an attempt to combat overtourism.

Up to 16,000 of these can be rental cars while the other 4,108 will be for tourists who travel by ferry to the island with their own vehicle.

Holidaymakers who want to take their own car to Ibiza will have to obtain a permit at a cost of €1 per day.

Caravan owners will have to provide evidence of a campsite booking and will not be allowed into Ibiza if they are planning to wild camp at the side of the road.

Ibiza has just 160,000 residents but gets over three million tourists per year - leading to more cars on the roads and creating congestion across the island.

The Mediterranean destination has previously seen protests against tourism as locals have bemoaned that the industry has caused housing to become unaffordable - with over 1,000 people taking to the streets last year in protest.

Ibiza has previously taken measures in a bid to prevent drunken and rowdy behaviour in a destination renowned for partying.

In San Antonio, people are no longer allowed to drink on the street.

Shops selling alcohol must close between 9:30pm and 8am and people can be fined up to €1,500 should their drinking disrupt the peace.
