The award, compiled by Chris Haslam of *The Sunday Times*, recognises a beach that delivers both natural beauty and a welcoming atmosphere for visitors.
Visitors to Summerleaze can enjoy wide stretches of golden sand, safe paddling in the tidal Bude Sea Pool, and the convenience of local cafés such as Life’s a Beach and the Rustic Tea Garden. The South West Coast Path runs along the area, providing walkers with dramatic cliffside views and access to nearby Crooklets Beach and Northcott Mouth Beach.
Haslam, chief travel writer at The Sunday Times, said: "This is an award that’s long overdue. Year after year I’ve parked on the wharf beside the library, walked out along the Strand Wall, and then dropped down by the lock onto Summerleaze Beach. Sometimes I’ve paddled out into the surf, and on other occasions I’ve followed the dune line around past the beach huts and the Bude Sea Pool."
The Sea Pool, a tide-filled lido built in the 1920s, provides safe swimming for early tourists and families, while the surrounding beaches offer more rugged, natural experiences. The combination of recreational facilities, natural beauty and community engagement helped secure Summerleaze the top spot.
Local amenities also contributed to the accolade. Visitors praised Rosie’s Kitchen for its refreshments and the nearby cafes for creating a friendly environment. Haslam noted that the balance between relaxation and adventure makes Summerleaze exceptional.
He added: "I’ve continued along the South West Coast Path along the cricket ground boundary to rocky Crooklets Beach; stopped for a brew at Rosie’s Kitchen and climbed up over Maer Cliff to Northcott Mouth Beach, thus justifying another cup of tea beside the stream at the Rustic Tea Garden."
Summerleaze’s recognition comes amid a growing appreciation for UK coastal escapes. Beaches that combine accessibility, safety, and local character are increasingly popular with domestic travellers seeking alternatives to overseas resorts.
Bude’s local community has embraced the spotlight, highlighting the importance of protecting the coastline and maintaining facilities for both residents and visitors. The award emphasises not just natural beauty, but the human touch — a welcoming atmosphere, community involvement, and amenities that enhance the beach experience.
For those planning a summer getaway, Summerleaze Beach now stands as the definitive destination, offering both adventure and comfort in Cornwall’s rugged north coast.
