Ada Hegerberg doesn't regret Norway boycott

Ada Hegerberg doesn’t regret her boycott of Norway’s national team.

The Lyon striker stepped away from playing for her country after they exited Euro 2017, missing the 2019 World Cup, in protest at the federation’s treatment of and lack of investment in the women’s game and she is happy with her stance.

Ada – who pulled a Norway shirt on again in March 2022 after positive talks with the federation’s new president, her former national teammate Lise Klaveness – told FourFourTwo magazine: “Honestly when I make my decisions I never go back and think I should have done this or that.

“I’m very at peace with my decisions, I follow my gut.

“I do reflect but I follow my intuition. It’s been way too rocky in terms of results and on a personal level, I’m used to being in a winning position with my club.

"Norway is a very small country, we have to maximise what we have and the truth is we haven’t, but it shouldn’t mean we’re not positive about the future.

“It just shows there’s a lot of work to do, to maximise the potential and quality we do have.”

The 28-year-old sportswoman thinks Norway are heading in an “exciting” direction with the appointment of Gemma Grainger – the former Leeds, Middlesbrough, England Under 17 and Wales boss – in February.

She said: “In the last years, there’s been a complete lack of stability with the national team.

“There have been way too many changes, coaches in and out, and it’s been hard to find the stability you need to work towards a major tournament.

“It’s not something that happens over a couple of months. It’s a culture, a style of play.

“They’ve gone for someone outside that federation culture. It’s a new path, which is exciting, and now it’s up to us and up to Gemma with us, to find that stability.”
