Majority of football fans don't understand all the sport's rules

Only a third of Brits understand all the rules of football.

With millions expected to tune in to watch Euro 2024, a new study has found 71% agree the rules of the beautiful game are confusing, while 39% feel left out of the conversation when amongst fanatical friends.

The offside rule (28%), VAR (Video Assistant Referee) decisions (26%) and referee hand signals (25%) are amongst the rules Brits don't understand, but almost half (45%) are happy to enjoy the social element of the tournament, finding it often more exciting than the actual games.

But help is on the way as PizzaExpress is launching a Large Classic Football Ch-EAT Sheet – along with a Dough Ball Penalty Shoot-Out game – just in time for kick-off, with the handy guide designed to be sneakily stuck inside a pizza box so everyone can join in the conversation.

Jo Vaughton, Marketing Director at PizzaExpress, said: “With an exciting summer of sport ahead of us, we know that it will be full of social gatherings and celebrations. Our new delicious Large Classic pizza – the ultimate sharing pizza – and the launch of our Football Ch-EAT Sheet and Dough Ball Penalty Shoot-Out are all about bringing people together, and making memories over this momentous summer.”
