Sarina Wiegman is 'close' to knowing England XI for Euro 2025

Sarina Wiegman is "close" to knowing her England team for Euro 2025.

The Lionesses manager will name her squad for the team's defence of their European title this summer on Thursday (05.06.25) and explained that she has a firm idea of who will be in her starting XI for the opening game against France on July 5.

Wiegman said: "I'm close to the squad and will announce on Thursday. That is very close and [I'm] close to the starting line-up, but there is a month to go. We have ideas but also have Jamaica to play, some things are still open."

England were beaten 2-1 by Spain in the Nations League on Tuesday (03.06.25) in their penultimate game before the tournament and the coach says her players learnt some valuable lessons despite falling to defeat against the world champions.

Wiegman explained: "It was a very intense game, of course, we know they are very tight on the ball, but I thought we did well.

"But we can see where we can harm them, I think a couple more times we could have not been offside or played a little quicker behind or switched the game or switched play quicker, we could have harmed them even more.

"I think in the second half, they started really quick and they did something different, they pressed even higher and we had some trouble getting out of the press and keeping the ball.

"And of course then they brought Pina in, and she was very secure with her shots."

Wiegman deemed the latest Lionesses camp as "very positive" as she was able to make a final assessment of the players ahead of naming her Euros squad.

She said: "We had a very good week.

"We’ve had players coming back from injury, players fighting for positions, fighting for minutes or for selection, and I think that is very positive.

"Now some will keep training because they need to train, others will take a couple of days off and then we move forward come together, get ready for Jamaica and then France."
