Keegan Bradley guided by other sporting captains

Keegan Bradley has sought advice from captains in different sports ahead of the Ryder Cup.

The former PGA Championship winner will lead the US side in the upcoming tournament and has been listening to a number of different experts, including “extremely helpful” fellow golfer Tiger Woods.

He told Today’s Golfer magazine: “I’ve been speaking to a lot of coaches in all different sports. I’ve been speaking to a lot of captains.

“Tiger did it at the Presidents Cup, so I’ve been talking to him.

“He’s been extremely helpful.

“I think the more information I can get from successful coaches, especially on national teams and in any sport, on how to bring together really alpha athletes that are used to being on their own, so that’s valuable.”

Keegan spent some time deliberating on whether to play in the tournament himself before leaving himself out of the squad but admitted he had always wanted to just focus on his captaincy anyway.

He said: “To be honest with you, I never really planned on playing. I really wanted to just be the captain.

“I felt strongly about that. I want to serve the guys.

“They asked me to do a job and I want to do it to the best of my abilities.

“When they called me and told me I was being made the Ryder Cup captain, the first thing they said was, ‘We want you to be the first playing captain since Arnold Palmer in 1962.’

“And I mean, my head was spinning. I didn’t know what they were talking about, but they knew that was a possibility and that we would have things in place for that.”
