Arne Slot calls for Liverpool improvement despite winning start to season

Arne Slot thinks there is plenty of room for improvement at Liverpool.

The Reds have won all five matches so far this season but the manager doesn't want the team to be constantly relying on late goals to snatch victories as they have done frequently already this term.

Slot told reporters: "We have only played five games, so it is difficult to see a long-term pattern.

"Against Bournemouth, we were too open, and we missed Ryan (Gravenberch) in midfield and they scored two counter goals. Atletico (Madrid) didn't score twice on the transition, so you cannot compare.

"It is not ideal if we have a two-goal lead three times and give it away, so we need to improve, as many other things we need to improve. But the positive thing about it is if we feel the urgency again, we are able to score a goal.

"This is definitely something we talk about. You can run out of steam or energy at the end of the season if you mentally and physically have to go all the way to the end all the time in games, so it is never a good idea to keep on doing this but if we need it, I still hope we can do it."

Liverpool take on Merseyside rivals Everton in the Premier League on Saturday (20.09.25) and Slot hailed the "respect" between the clubs as he reflected on the response to the tragic death of Reds striker Diogo Jota in a car crash in July.

The Dutch coach said: "There is rivalry but what I also liked and I want to emphasise in this moment as well is what they did when Diogo passed away, coming to Anfield, being there, and of course they showed their respect from sporting director to sporting director and all these kind of things.

"So, in these moments of time it's so nice to see that in those tragedies the rivalry is still there but the respect towards both is also there."
