‘When are we going to take the training wheels off?’: Terence Crawford’s coach blasts Jaron Ennis

Terence Crawford’s coach Bernie Davis has hit out at Jaron Ennis, asking him when is he “going to take the training wheels off”.

Boots, 28, had failed to praise ‘Bud’, 38, for his victory over Saul ‘Canlo’ Alverez, 35, in Las Vegas last month - simply saying “that’s boxing” - and Crawford’s coach has now blasted Ennis for not stepping into the ring with top-level fighters.

Speaking with MillCity Boxing, Davis said: “We’re talking about a guy that has got 30 fights, not two fights. When are we going to take the training wheels off of him?

“It’s not that I dislike ‘Boots.’ I’m saying put up or shut up. I’m tired of hearing about this and that. But there ain’t no proof in the pudding. Who is he?”

Davis isn’t the only coach to criticise Ennis for his comments about Crawford’s Canelo victory - which he had won by unanimous decision - as trainer Brian Norman Sr. had also labelled Boots as a “hater”.

He said: “They asked the man a simple question, they asked him about the performance, and what are you thinking? What do you think? The man [Ennis] said, ‘It’s boxing.’

“Why can’t you just give him his props? You got a problem with anybody else? You’re a hater, bro. Clearly, he hates him. You said Canelo was going to whoop his a**. You’re a hater.”

In August, Ennis announced he would be moving up to the junior middleweight division, and would be fighting Uisma Lima, 32, on October 11.

Ennis said in a statement from Matchroom Boxing: “They can say what they want it don't make me a difference.

“These dudes can't tie my shoes. I'm the best in the world and they know it. I want all the big names and belts - the tour continues.”

Following his fight with ‘Monstro’, Boots is expected to face off with Vergil Ortiz Jr., 27, early next year.
