Oleksandr Usyk eyes Deontay Wilder world title fight for 2026

Oleksandr Usyk eyes Deontay Wilder world title fight for 2026

Oleksandr Usyk wants to defend his world heavyweight titles against Deontay Wilder in 2026.

The two-time undisputed champion, 38, has been absent from the ring since stopping Daniel Dubois, 28, in their July rematch, and Usyk has now set his sights on the former long-reigning WBC king, 40, as his next opponent.

Speaking to Boxing King Media, he said: “I want to fight Deontay Wilder. I think it’s interesting.

“This is a world champion guy, this is a very famous guy, this is a strong guy. He is one of the great heavyweights of the last 10 years.”

The Cat recently vacated the WBO belt, allowing Fabio Wardley, 30, to be elevated as champion, but Usyk still holds the WBC, WBA and IBF titles and insists he intends to regain undisputed status.

He said: “Some people are saying I’m not undisputed champion anymore. Well, that is only temporary.”

Usyk unified the division for the second time when he halted Dubois in the fifth round at Wembley Stadium, reinforcing his place as one of the most dominant heavyweights of the modern era.

The Bronze Bomber, meanwhile, has welcomed the idea of facing Usyk after returning to victory with a seventh-round stoppage of Tyrrell Anthony Herndon, 38, in June.

Wilder enjoyed a five-year reign as WBC champion from 2015 to 2020, defending the belt 10 times before losing it to Tyson Fury, 37, in their second meeting.

Wilder’s co-manager Shelly Finkel told Sky Sports: “Usyk is a great champion. We have plans for next year and we’d like Oleksandr Usyk to be part of them. If we receive the right offer, we would be open to that fight.”

A clash between Usyk and Wilder would pit two contrasting styles together, Usyk’s technical brilliance and movement against Wilder’s destructive knockout power, which produced 42 stoppages in his first 43 victories.

Wilder remains one of the division’s most explosive punchers, but recent losses to Fury and Joseph Parker, 33, have raised questions about whether he can recapture his peak form.

His win over Herndon, however, has kept him in contention for one last push towards a world title.

Usyk’s ambition to unify all four belts again has also added intrigue to the heavyweight landscape.

With the IBF title situation expected to evolve in 2025 and the WBO now occupied by Wardley, The Cat’s pursuit of a third undisputed reign is set to shape the division in the coming year.
