Erling Haaland thinks people should ‘criticise him’ as he beats 100 Premier League goal record

Erling Haaland thinks he “should be criticised” if he does not deliver elite numbers after becoming the fastest player in Premier League history to reach 100 goals.

The 24-year-old striker reached the achievement in just 111 Premier League appearances following Manchester City's 5-4 victory over Fulham, surpassing Alan Shearer’s long-standing record of 124 games – a benchmark that had stood since December 1995.

Haaland opened the scoring at Craven Cottage on Tuesday (02.12.25), moments after striking the post, and played a decisive role in a chaotic encounter that saw City close the gap to leaders Arsenal to two points.

Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: “It [the record] is huge and I am really proud and of course it is a massive thing.

“The 100 club is a nice thing to be in and I am happy. I tried to help the team with scoring goals and that is my job.”

The striker, who also assisted Tijjani Reijnders, 27, and Phil Foden, 25, insisted after the match that he welcomes pressure and expects scrutiny when he falls short of expectations.

Haaland stressed that scoring relentlessly is a basic requirement for a Manchester City No. nine.

He said: “Every game is a different game… You need to focus ahead. I don’t want to say the words, but when you are striker for Man City, you should be delivering great numbers and that is my job.

“People should criticise me if I don’t. That is normally what people do, so in the end I should deliver.”

City had appeared out of sight at 5-1 before Fulham launched an unlikely late surge, inspired by substitute Samuel Chukwueze, 26, and Alex Iwobi, 29, who combined for three goals to set up a tense finale.

Citizens manager Pep Guardiola’s side ultimately held firm, with the head coach both praising Haaland and joking about the chaos that unfolded.

Speaking to Match of the Day, Guardiola said: “It’s incredible, impressive. He was outstanding. Today he was unbelievable.

“He scored a fantastic goal. Hopefully he’s starving hungry to continue with this club to make more and more goals.”

Reflecting on the nine-goal thriller, he added: “I’m so old, and the players don’t respect me! They don’t have to treat their manager in that way… In the end, it was a question of character, resilience and defence.”

Haaland is the 35th player to reach 100 Premier League goals.

His next target is moving clear of Matt Le Tissier, also on 100, while Mohamed Salah’s 190 and Shearer’s record 260 remain the longer-term milestones.
