England boss Thomas Tuchel says talent won’t guarantee players a World Cup squad spot

England head coach Thomas Tuchel has warned that talent alone will not be enough to secure a place in his FIFA World Cup squad.

The Three Lions will head to the expanded 2026 tournament in the U.S., Canada and Mexico among the favourites, with Tuchel already shaping the culture he believes is required to go all the way.

He said: “When I speak to players who have been in World Cups, it has always made the difference when the connection was right, when the communication was right, between the players first of all.

“So, when the players had the feeling that the right group is in camp, that they knew their role, why they are in camp, what is expected of them, and they had the feeling that the tournament could even go on for another four weeks and they would be happy to be together, then they were successful.”

Tuchel - who has previously left high-profile players like Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden out of squads at club and international level - stressed that balance would be central to his selection process.

He said: “When they had the feeling after the round of 16 already, ‘Oh, when can we finally go home?’ and the energy was not right, they didn’t make it. This just tells me that we have to get the selection right.

“It will be very important that we don’t select just for talent, but also for what we need from a player.”

The former Chelsea and Bayern Munich manager explained that squad roles and personalities would be scrutinised just as closely as performances.

He said: “What are the social skills of a player? Is he a good team-mate? Can he support if his role is maybe the supporting role? So, this is where the focus is.”

England have only two remaining warm-up fixtures - against Uruguay and Japan in March - before Tuchel finalises his squad, increasing the pressure on players to impress both on and off the pitch.

Tournament conditions are also a major factor in his thinking, with extreme heat and travel expected to test squads over a prolonged period.

He said: “It is a big tournament regarding distances, the time zones that you travel, the altitude, difference of altitude, difference of weather conditions. It will be very hot.”
