Anthony Joshua ‘taking his time to get back on track’ following horror car crash, Eddie Hearn says

Anthony Joshua is “taking his time to get back on track” after a fatal car crash claimed the lives of two of his closest teammates, his promoter Eddie Hearn has said.

The two-time heavyweight world champion, 36, was hospitalised following the accident near Lagos, Nigeria in December, which resulted in the deaths of his close friends and team members Sina Ghami and Latif ‘Latz’ Ayodele.

On social media, the Matchroom Boxing promoter wrote: “Great to catch up with Anthony Joshua today.

“His resilience and strength is inspiring. The loss is heavy and he will take his time to get back on track.

“But said he is truly grateful for all the support and the love shown for Latz and Sina.”

Hearn also shared a brief video of Joshua riding a stationary bike as he gradually resumes light activity.

Just days after defeating Jake Paul, 29, in Miami, Florida, Joshua was travelling in an SUV that collided with a stationary truck outside Lagos on December 29, resulting in the deaths of his close friends and team members Sina Ghami and Latif ‘Latz’ Ayodele.

AJ sustained minor injuries but was treated in hospital before returning to the UK, with the funerals for Ghami and Ayodele taking place earlier this month.

Following the crash, Hearn insisted Joshua’s future in boxing could only be decided by him.

He told Fight Hub TV: “I think we live in a world today where everyone feels like they deserve to know how he’s feeling and what’s next. I’m getting calls every day from media asking for an update on his career, and it’s like, are you serious?

“Right now, whilst he’ll need strength around him, he should be left alone to recover physically and emotionally and spiritually. Anything you hear about his career - until you hear it from AJ - don’t believe it.”

Hearn made clear that boxing conversations were not even close to taking place.

The promoter said: “Unfortunately it was a terrible accident, a tragic situation, and he’ll take a little bit of time to recover physically. I think more will come out on that when Anthony’s prepared to share it.

“For me, I find it a little bit disrespectful to even talk about boxing right now. This is not boxing, this is life, and this is the very, very sad side of life.”
