Dynamite, 28, has been out of the ring since his rematch defeat to Oleksandr Usyk, 39, last July, but a return against Big Bang, 42, is now being actively explored.
Zhang’s co-manager Terry Lane told Sky Sports: “Zhang absolutely wants the Dubois fight. It’s been on his wishlist for some time now. We’ve made Queensberry aware, and let’s hope we can get it done.”
The bout would match two of the division’s heaviest punchers at a pivotal moment in their careers.
Zhang has built a reputation as one of the most destructive operators in the heavyweight ranks, despite coming off a stoppage loss to Agit Kabayel, 33, last February.
Lane believes the styles make for a compelling contest.
He said: “Zhang versus Dubois would be an absolute banger. Both are still top guys despite coming off of losses. It makes sense to make.”
Dubois has been regrouping since his fifth-round knockout loss to Usyk at Wembley Stadium, London - a defeat that ended his second reign as IBF champion.
Dubois has since parted ways with long-time trainer Don Charles and is now working under Tony Sims as he plots his route back into world title contention.
Frank Warren, who promotes Dubois through Queensberry Promotions, has also welcomed the idea of a clash with Zhang.
Speaking to the Queensberry Promotions YouTube channel, he said: “I’d like to see him in with Big Bang. I think that’s a great fight. I like that fight. I’d like to see that. Let’s see.”
Reflecting on Dubois’ defeat to Usyk, former trainer Charles suggested several tactical factors contributed to the outcome rather than a one-sided contest.
Speaking to talkBOXING, he said: “Daniel’s known for his jab, a feared jab. Usyk was the one who became the jabber in that fight. That set the precedent.”
He said: “We couldn’t get our jabs going. There’s a lot of factors. It wasn’t a walk in the park. The fight was in the balance and then we got caught in the exchanges. It took a tremendous shock.”
