Spurs still leading Ross Barkley chase

Tottenham are thought to be frontrunners to sign Ross Barkley in January, with the Everton man still keen on a move to Spurs.

Barkley's future remains unresolved but he is unlikely to get a second chance at Everton this season, with Toffees boss Ronald Koeman unwilling to play him after advising him at the end of last term to either sign a new contract or leave.

The England international was heavily linked with an exit from Goodison Park all summer but it never materialised, despite deadline-day talks with Chelsea.

Reports claim the 23-year-old's first choice was to join Tottenham ahead of the Premier League champions, but chairman Daniel Levy was reluctant to make an offer this summer because he knows he can probably land him for a considerably cheaper fee in January than the £25million Everton were asking for this week.

Spurs will monitor the situation closely and are widely expected to make their move for Barkley in the January transfer window in the hope they can land him for around £10 million, as his contract at Everton runs down.
