Fernando Llorente in line for Spurs start

Fernando Llorente is set to make his first start for Spurs in the Carabao Cup tie against Barnsley and Dele Alli could also feature.

Summer signings Llorente and Juan Foyth are both likely to be handed their first starts for the club, Llorente having stepped off the bench to make his debut in the goalless draw against Swansea on Saturday.

Boss Mauricio Pochettino is set to rest several key players, including Harry Kane and Toby Alderweireld, but Alli will play as he seeks to rediscover some form after a string of below-par performances.

Academy graduates such as Harry Winks, Tashan Oakley-Boothe and Kyle Walker-Peters could also be involved at Wembley.

Danny Rose and Victor Wanyama are both out with knee injuries and Erik Lamela is also unavailable as he recovers from a problem with his hips.

While Pochettino insists Spurs are taking the Carabao Cup seriously, he admits the Premier League and Champions League come first for the club this season.

"The project here at Tottenham is to try to win the Premier League or the Champions League," Pochettino said.

"For me, that is the two big trophies. Okay, I would love to win the Carabao Cup or the FA Cup for our fans. But Tottenham must build a project with the possibility to fight for the Champions League or Premier League.

"Sorry, first of all it is the Premier League and then the Champions League. If we are going to try to win the Carabao Cup or FA Cup, and forget the Premier League or Champions League, it's a big mistake."

Provisional squad: Lloris, Vorm, Gazzaniga, Davies, Walker-Peters, Vertonghen, Alderweireld, Sanchez, Foyth, Trippier, Aurier, Dier, Dembele, Eriksen, Sissoko, Oakley-Boothe, Son, Llorente, Kane.
