Chris Wood never refused to play at Leeds

Burnley striker Chris Wood insists he never refused to play for former club Leeds in order to push through a move to the Clarets.

Wood has come in for criticism for refusing to turn out for Leeds at Sunderland, a game they won 2-0 without him, because a move to Burnley had been agreed but not completed.

As it turns out that was not the case and Wood is keen for his former club's fans to know the truth, saying the reason he did not play at Sunderland was because Burnley's offer stipulated he was not allowed to do so.

Wood, who has netted three times for the Clarets since his move, told the Independent: "Nobody understands that the bid Burnley put in was subject to me not playing against Sunderland, and everybody thinks that I refused to play, but it was out of my hands.

"The bid went in at 3pm on the Friday and got accepted at 5pm on the Friday.

"It was completely out of my hands whether I played or not. Burnley took that out of the equation because they didn't want the worst to happen."
