The midfielder has struggled to make an impact at Stamford Bridge after arriving in a £35million deal from Leicester and is currently well down the pecking order.
It came as something of a surprise that the 28-year-old failed to get himself fixed up with a new club in the summer as it was clear he was not in the plans of Maurizio Sarri.
Chelsea snapped up Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic, while Ruben Loftus-Cheek returned from a loan spell at Crystal Palace. Add to that Ross Barkley being fit and available, and Cesc Fabregas on the way back, Drinkwater's route to the first team is completely blocked.
Reports now claim that Leicester will offer him the chance to return to the King Power Stadium on loan with a view to a permanent deal when the window opens.
Drinkwater would jump at the chance of such an opportunity, but he could have options as both West Ham and Southampton are also said to be interested.
