Launched in 2017, Clips was designed to make video creation quick and accessible for iPhone and iPad users, offering an easy way to add text, filters, stickers, and music to short clips for sharing on social media.
At the time, Apple promoted it as a fun, mobile-first alternative to traditional video-editing tools like iMovie, positioning it as a creative outlet for everyday users.
The app has already been removed from the App Store, meaning new users can no longer download it.
Those who already have Clips installed can continue using it — but only if their devices are running iOS 26 or iPadOS 26.
In a statement confirming the shutdown, Apple said: "This Clips app is no longer being updated."
The tech giant added that the app will no longer receive new features, bug fixes, or compatibility updates for future iPhone software releases.
Apple is also urging users to back up their existing videos to ensure they aren’t lost when Clips eventually becomes unsupported.
The company advised: "Save your Clips videos to your photo library or another location."
It has suggested that users can continue editing their footage using iMovie or third-party apps like VN Video Editor, GoPro Quik, or InShot.
When Clips first launched, Apple described it as "a new app that makes it quick and fun for anyone to create expressive videos".
At the time, Susan Prescott, then Apple’s vice president of Apps Product Marketing, said: "The effects, filters and amazing new Live Titles we’ve designed for Clips let anyone make great-looking, easily sharable videos with just a few taps."
The move marks another example of Apple streamlining its software offerings as it focuses on integrating more AI-powered creative tools into its ecosystem.
