Former PM Rishi Sunak set for roles at Microsoft and AI firm

Former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is reportedly set to take up new advisory roles at Microsoft and artificial intelligence (AI) startup Anthropic, marking his first major move into the private sector since leaving Downing Street last year.

Sunak is expected to join Microsoft in a non-executive advisory capacity, where he will focus on AI regulation, innovation, and public policy.

The former PM, who made technology and AI a central part of his government’s economic strategy, is also set to take on a second position at Antropic focused on "ethical AI deployment" and global tech partnerships.

During his time in office, Sunak positioned the UK as a potential "AI superpower", hosting the AI Safety Summit at Bletchley Park in 2023 and spearheading efforts to attract investment from major technology companies, including OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Anthropic.

The ex-Conservative leader's upcoming appointments have already drawn scrutiny from opposition MPs and transparency campaigners, who have urged the Advisory Committee on Business Appointments (ACOBA) to impose conditions ensuring that Sunak’s work does not conflict with privileged information obtained while in government.

ACOBA is expected to review the roles before approval.

A spokesperson for Sunak said the politician - who continues to serve as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Richmond and Northallerton - "remains committed to advancing responsible innovation" and will "continue working with leading companies to ensure the benefits of AI are realised safely and widely".

Analysts say Sunak’s transition to the tech industry underscores the growing influence of former policymakers in shaping global AI regulation.

Daniel Ives, an analyst at Wedbush Securities, said: "His credibility on AI governance makes him an attractive hire for major players like Microsoft."
