Arc Raiders head defends AI in games development, saying ‘there’s no shortcut to making great games’

Embark Studios CCO Stefan Strandberg has defended the use of artificial intelligence in developing Arc Raiders, saying “there’s no shortcut to making great games”.

Strandberg, who is also the studio’s co-founder - defended Embark’s use of AI-assisted tools in making its new multiplayer shooter, arguing they enhance - not replace - human creativity.

Speaking with Eurogamer, he said: “We use AI as tools to assist in some content creation. But it’s always in the context of creativity, as an expression of the team.”

Embark previously drew criticism for using text-to-speech (TTS) systems in The Finals, blending real voice acting with AI-generated dialogue to speed up production.

The same technology appears in Arc Raiders, alongside machine learning-driven enemy animation, which allows foes to dynamically react to damage - such as rebalancing when a leg is shot off.

Strandberg stressed that Arc Raiders does not use generative AI, emphasising that human performance and creative direction remain central.

A veteran of Electronic Arts’ Battlefield franchise, Strandberg said AI tools have helped Embark maintain a smaller development team while achieving AAA-level ambition.

He said: “Some IPs today need 2,000 or even 3,000 people. We wanted to stay nimble.

“AI helps us expand the scope of what we can do without sacrificing our independence or creativity.”

Still, Strandberg was clear about the limits of automation.

He said: “There are no shortcuts to making great games. You need a clear vision, a great culture, and strong goals. The tools don’t make the game - people do.”

By using AI to streamline repetitive tasks rather than replace talent, Embark hopes to balance innovation with integrity, a stance likely to shape future debates as studios experiment with the role of AI in development.
